Baseball Sweeps Rutgers-Camden in Shutout Fashion

Union, N.J. (4/20/19) – The Kean University baseball team collected two shutout wins in sweeping Rutgers-Camden by the finals of 4-0 and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon in NJAC action.

The Cougars improve to 25-11 this spring and they are now tied for the top spot in the NJAC with an 11-3 record as they are riding a seven game win streak.

Rutgers-Camden falls to 15-17 overall and 6-7 in conference play.

Game 1 – Kean 4, Rutgers-Camden 0

Tyler Hopman tossed a complete game shutout, scattering six singles and walking two.  He struck out four to improve to 4-4 overall. 

Kean picked up two runs in the fifth and added insurance with two runs in the ninth.  Conner DeForge notched an RBI sacrifice while Brian Cole scored on an error to take a 2-0 lead after five.

Nick Polizzano walked to lead off the top of the ninth and Zachary Marzano drove him home with an RBI triple.  Derek Walker made it 4-0 with a single, driving home Marzano.

John Carello and Cole were each 3-for-4 in the opener.

Game 2 – Kean 8, Rutgers-Camden 0

Christopher Rossi and Marzano combined in the shutout in the nightcap.  Rossi earned the win (4-1) as he tossed seven innings scattering eight singles with three walks and five strikeouts.  Marzano tossed the eighth and ninth and allowed just one walk and hit by pitch and fanned four.

Offensively Kean scored in bunches, plating three runs in the second and with a 4-0 lead plating three more in the sixth.

Walker and Zach Scire each collected an RBI in the second while Walker later scored on a wild pitch.

With two outs in the fifth, DeForge tripled with two outs and later scored on an error for a 4-0 advantage.  Kean broke the game open in the sixth with three more as Marzano and Scire tallied RBI and Polizzano scored on an error.

Offensively Scire was 1-for-2 with two RBI while Polizzano, DeForge and Marzano were each 2-for-4.

Chris Jones recorded his 208th hit for the Scarlet Raptors, tying the program mark in that category.

The Cougars have their last scheduled regular season home game on Thursday when they face New Jersey City University.
