Baseball Tops NJCU in NJAC Doubleheader Action

Union, N.J. (4/25/19) – The Kean University baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of New Jersey City University by the finals of 8-4 and 3-0 in 10 innings on Thursday evening in NJAC action.

Game 1 – Kean 8, NJCU 4

The Cougars (27-11, 13-3 NJAC) fell behind 3-0 early as NJCU (14-18, 3-13 NJAC) Matt Corsi registered a one out, RBI single and Leo Colon followed with a two RBI single.

Kean responded with one in the fifth on an RBI single from John Carello and took the lead for good with a four spot in the sixth.  Brian Cole delivered a two RBI single in the spurt.

The Cougars added three more in the seventh for insurance with Zachary Marzano, Zach Joe and Cole and collecting RBI singles.

Frank LoGiudice (6-2) earned the win after tossing seven innings allowing two earned runs and five hits.  He walked two and fanned five.

Offensively Cole was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Carello was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Game 2 – Kean 3, NJCU 0 (10 innings)

Kean needed extras in the nightcap as a tight pitchers' duel left both teams scoreless after regulation.  In the deciding 10th frame Conner DeForge lined a single to right to start things off.  Carello followed with a single of his own and a miscue in the outfield put runners on the corners.  Mike Perone Jr. lofted a sac fly for the game's first run.  LoGuidice doubled home Carello for a 2-0 lead and Derek Walker rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to center.

Marzano worked into and out of trouble in the bottom of the 10th to earn the win.

Marzano (2-0) tossed two innings of shutout ball and allowed just three hits and a walk.  Not to be lost was the start of Daniel Chiusano who threw eight innings of scoreless ball with six strikeouts and one walk.

Anthony Zicaro (2-2) suffered the loss after throwing nine plus innings.  He walked two and struck out three.

Kean closes out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to The College of New Jersey for an NJAC doubleheader.
