Indianapolis, Ind. (5/13/19) – The Kean University baseball team was selected as one of 16 Pool C at-large berths as announced during the NCAA Division III Baseball Selection Show on Monday afternoon.
The Cougars (29-14) are making their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and have appeared in the finals in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2013, culminating with the team's national championship in 2007. Kean sports a 48-28 overall record in the tournament with a 42-18 record in regional play.
For the first time Kean will be "hosting" on their own field. Previously the institution hosted several eight team regional tournaments at a predetermined stadium off-site. This year is the first that features a new format with regional action taking place at 16 on-campus sites. The 16 winners of the four or two team regionals will then advance for a super regional tournament next weekend in a best of three series with eight finalists advancing to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Kean is tabbed second in their pod with #1 Ithaca College (31-7), #3 Shenandoah University (31-12) and #4 Westfield State University (27-14).
Ithaca, the Empire 8 Conference champions for the eighth consecutive season, will be making its 48th all-time appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship. The Bombers swept through last weekend's E8 Tournament in Ithaca with a 5-0 win over Utica to open the championship and then defeated St. John Fisher, 4-0 and 8-5, to secure the title. Ithaca is 126-95 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and has won two national championships, 1980 and 1988.
Shenandoah is making their 10th trip in the NCAA Tournament, all since 2009. The Hornets clinched an automatic bid into the bracket with five wins in the ODAC Tournament. They sport a 24-11 overall record in NCAA Tournament play.
Westfield is making its second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 11th overall. The Owls earned a Pool A bid by winning the MASCAC Championship this past weekend.
