Buena Vista, Va. (9/23/17) – The Kean University football team picked up their first win of the 2017 season by defeating Southern Virginia University by the final of 28-14 on Saturday afternoon.
Kean improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC while Southern Virginia falls to 0-4 and 0-3 in conference play.
The Cougars controlled most of the first half offensively, possessing the ball for more than 18 minutes. Kean scored on their first possession with a balanced drive that ate up over nine minutes of the first quarter. Brian Matthews crossed the goal line with a one yard plunge for the game's first touchdown.
Kean would later make it 14-0 in the second quarter as Charles App found Kyle Rooney on a fourth and five situation that extended the drive deep into the redzone. App finished off the drive on the very next play for the TD.
The defense and special teams combined to put the Cougars ahead 21-0 on the very next series. Kean forced a three and out and Amani Richardson blocked the ensuing punt that Jessey Asare caught in the endzone for the 21-0 lead.
SVU used their second possession of the second half to erase the shutout with a 53 yard pass from Ty Jones to Akiva Wedge.
Both teams scored late in the game as Matthews scampered for a 36 yard TD run with 2:23 on the clock. Jones found Michael Carroll with less than a minute in the game for what would be the final.
