Union, N.J. (9/29/18) – Quarterback Ja'Quill Burch was 17-of-21 for 219 yards and a touchdown in leading the Montclair State football team to a 27-0 victory over Kean University on Saturday night under the lights.
Craig Merkle ran for 104 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns as the Red Hawks remain undefeated to start the season (4-0, 3-0 NJAC).
Louie Zambardino led the Kean (0-4, 0-3 NJAC) defense with 11 total tackles, 1.5 for a loss and one forced fumble.
MSU used the opening possession to march down the field 76 yards on four plays, with Merkle finishing off the drive with a 38 yard sprint to go ahead 6-0. Kean's DeShawn Reed blocked the extra point, holding the Red Hawks to six.
The Red Hawks added seven more late in the first quarter as Burch pushed through the line for a two yard plunge, capping a seven play, 80 yard drive. His pass to Kason Campbell for 55 yards spurred the possession.
Burch found Stepp Oziegbe streaking in the endzone facing a third-and-22 situation to push ahead, 21-0 early in the second quarter.
Kean's best scoring opportunity in the half came in their next possession, but the Red Hawk defense held the Cougars scoreless after a first and goal opportunity from the 10 yard line as Kean later turned the ball over on downs at the one.
MSU rounded out the scoring in the third quarter as Merkle recorded his second touchdown of the day, this time from one yard out, finishing the seven play, 37 yard drive.
In the heavily penalized contest, the Red Hawks were flagged 12 times for 135 yards while Kean saw eight penalties for 63 yards.
For the Cougars, David Patterson Jr. caught seven passes for 67 yards while Reed ended the night with 10 total tackles, a half sack and a blocked kick.
Kean heads to William Paterson University next Saturday in NJAC action beginning at 1 p.m.
