Field Hockey Falls in NJAC Opener

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (9/24/14) – In the NJAC opener for the Kean University field hockey team, the Cougars dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 8 Montclair State. Kean is now 6-3 while the Red Hawks improved to 7-1.

Montclair struck first at 4:30 with a goal by freshman Kaitlyn Struss, assisted by Megan Roeloffs. The pressure continued with another Red Hawks goal by Danielle Butrico off of a penalty corner.

But Kean would answer back five minutes later with its own goal off a corner; Chelsea Mann scored it for the Cougars. After a shot by Marissa Robinson was blocked down in front, Bridgette Bottinelli got the rebound, passed it through a scramble in front and Mann (pictured left) knocked it in.

But Montclair kept up the pressue. Goalie Katie DiCarlo had a save to stop Joelle Butrico shot, but Maura Johnston was there for the rebound and tap in. The Cougars would go into halftime down 3-1.

The Red Hawks added two more goals in the second half and held Kean scoreless the rest of the way to win both sides' first NJAC matchup of the season.

Up next, the field hockey team will head to New England this weekend to take on Bay Path College. The game will be hosted at Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts at 3 p.m.
