UNION, N.J. (11/2/17)- Rachel Mills assisted on two of the Cougars three goals as the Kean University field hockey team reached their first ever NJAC Championship with a 3-2 defeat of nationally-ranked Montclair State University on Wednesday evening.
The Cougars improve to a program record 19-1 overall and will advance to the NJAC Championship game against the second seeded Lions of TCNJ on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. The Red Hawks fall to 16-3 overall and will wait to see if they can earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The victory was also sweeter for Head Coach Leslie LaFronz, who earns her first win over the Red Hawks since she took over the program in 2009. Kean last defeated MSU, 3-2, on October, 22nd, 2008.
Kean fell behind 1-0, before Krista LaMaina converted on a penalty stroke to even the contest at 1-1 in the 12th minute. The Cougars earned the stroke after a shot grazed the leg of an MSU defender.
Kean put two more goals on the board in the second half, when Shauna LaMaina scored off an assist from Mills in 40th minute and Kayla Molnar notched just her seventh goal of the season, off an assist from Mills, in the 42nd minute.
Despite MSU scoring a penalty stroke of their own in the 44th minute, the Cougars defense held the nationally ranked Red Hawks to just five shots in the second stanza.
Teresa Carr tallied a game-high six shots, while S. LaMaina recorded five and K. LaMaina took four. Megan Houser made two saves and improved to 10-1 in net. Amber Haslett recorded four shots, while Kailey Dalgauer tallied three. Kaitlyn Maguire took the loss and made nine saves.
Coach LaFronz and the Cougars will return to action on Saturday Nov. 4th, hosting the three-time defending NJAC Champion Lions of TCNJ at 5:00 p.m.
