UNION, N.J. (11/4/17) - Teresa Carr scored the lone goal as the Kean University Field Hockey team came up just short against the College of New Jersey, 2-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Field Hockey final on Saturday evening.
Kayla Peterson and Jillian Farley scored for the Lions who improve to 15-3 and capture their fourth straight NJAC Championship. Shauna LaMaina notched an assist for the Cougars who fall to 19-2 overall.
TCNJ got on the board early as Peterson sent a shot to the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. The Lions were set up with a penalty corner just four minutes into the contest. Caroline Quinn sent a pass to the top of the circle for Sidney Padilla. Padilla then sent the ball to Peterson who finished the shot.
TCNJ added to their lead with a goal from Farley in the 19th minute. After earning a corner, Peterson sent a shot towards the cage that was stopped by Megan Houser. The ball deflected back to Farley, who tapped it in for the 2-0 advantage.
With about twelve minutes remaining in the game, the Cougars finally got on the scoreboard. LaMaina received a pass at the top of the circle and quickly tapped it to Carr. Carr ripped a shot to the back of the cage.
Kean made strong pushes to send the game to overtime, but the defending champs' defense held strong and solidified the victory.
TCNJ earns the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and will find out who their first-round opponent will be tomorrow night at 11:30 p.m. Kean will be awaiting the release of the 2017 NCAA field hockey bracket, as their fate remains in the hands of the selection committee with a chance at an at-large bid.
