Patrone’s Overtime Game-Winner Propels Field Hockey to NCAA Second Round

UNION, N.J. (11/8/17)- Jenna Patrone scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute of overtime to give the No. 8 Kean University Field Hockey team their first NCAA Tournament victory with a 2-1 win over Juniata College on Wednesday evening.   

Kean improves to a program record 20-2 overall and advances to Saturday's second round against the Captains of Christopher Newport University. Juniata finishes their season at 13-7 overall.

Kean dominated a scoreless first half, outshooting the Eagles 7-2.

Juniata broke the scoreless tie in the 55th minute when Katie Alexander scored off a scrum in front of the cage for the 1-0 lead. Kean evened the contest at 1-1 in the 67th minute, when Krista LaMaina scored off an assist from Teresa Carr. Carr made a shovel pass to LaMaina, who controlled the ball and redirected it for the score.   

The Cougars late goal forced an extra 15 minutes. In the extra session, Patrone stole the ball from an Eagles defender and then beat the keeper one-on-one, allowing Kean to advance for the first time in program history.

Kean dominated on shots, 21-5, including Shauna LaMaina recording a match-high six shots. Alexander and Catherine Lanigan tallied two shots apiece, while Kylie Edwards made 12 saves in the loss for the Eagles. Megan Houser made two saves and improved to 11-2 in the cage.

Head Coach Leslie LaFronz and the Cougars will return to action in Newport News, Va. for an NCAA second round matchup with the No. 4 Captains of Christopher Newport University at 11:00 a.m.
