NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (11/11/17)- Teresa Carr notched her third game-winner of the season and vaulted the No. 8 Kean University Field Hockey team into the third round with a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Christopher Newport University on Saturday morning.
Shauna LaMaina scored and assisted on Carr's game-winner as the Cougars improve to 21-2 overall and advance to tomorrow's third round matchup against either Montclair State or Franklin & Marshall at 1:00 p.m. The Captains finish their season at 17-2 overall.
Kean struck first on their very first shot of the contest when LaMaina scored off a penalty corner from her sister Krista LaMaina to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute. CNU edged Kean on shots, 9-5, in the first half but four saves from Megan Houser kept the nationally ranked Captains scoreless at halftime.
CNU finally answered in the second half, when Jackie Kotoriy scored off an assist from Rachel Cooke to even the contest at 1-1 in the 47th minute. The Cougars responded in rather quick fashion and caught the Captains off guard when Carr scored off an assist from LaMaina to put Kean ahead at 2-1 in the 49th minute. Carr's goal came off a penalty corner as the Cougars passed it around the circle and the senior ripped a shot from the far side.
S. LaMaina tallied a team-high two shots, while Jenna Patrone, Carr, K. LaMaina and Raykena Brown each tallied a shot apiece. Houser finished with six saves and improves to 12-2 in the cage. Rachel Allshouse took a team-high eight shots, while Stephanie McKinney made one save and finished the season at 17-2 in net.
Head Coach Leslie LaFronz and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Sun. Nov. 12th, in the third round of the NCAA tournament against either Montclair State or Franklin & Marshall at 1:00 p.m.
