Reading, Pa. (12/15/10) – Freshman Michael Burton drained the game-winning jumper in overtime with four seconds remaining to send the Kean men's basketball team past host Alvernia University, 80-79, Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
Senior Jonathan Jones (pictured left) collected his ninth straight double-double as he recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cougars as they improve to 6-3 overall.
After a slow scoring first ten minutes of action the Cougars took their first lead of the game with 13:05 to go as rookie J.J. Hladik nailed a trey for the 12-11 advantage. After two ties and three lead changes, Kean went into halftime with a four point lead, 40-36. Burton led KU with 10 first-half points while rookie Kyle Latorre added four rebounds. Jones added eight points.
The Cougars continued to control the lead in the second-half and stretched their lead to as many as 10 points on two occasions as Jones collected two baskets for a 46-36 and 48-38 lead. The Crusaders rallied back and took their first lead of the second-half with 4:52 remaining as Charles Swiggett buried a three-pointer to pull ahead 67-65. The last two minutes of regulation were a back-and-forth affair with Alvernia taking the lead with 45 seconds to go on a layup from Seth Cornell for a 74-72 advantage. Burton (pictured right) then sent the game into overtime as he tied things up with a bucket with nine seconds remaining.
Burton finished with a career-high 18 points while Latorre added 11 points and seven rebounds.
