#11 Ramapo Surges Past Men's Basketball, 70-55

UNION, N.J. (1/23/13) – Senior Garret Thiel had 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead five players in double figures as #11 Ramapo College defeated the Kean University men's basketball team, 70-55 on Wednesday evening.

Junior Michael Burton led the way for the Cougars (6-13, 5-7 NJAC) with 14 points, while freshman Frank Nock chipped in 11 rebounds off the bench. Senior Will Sanborn had a game-high 18 points, including his 1000th career point, while the Roadrunners (17-2, 11-1 NJAC) got 13 points and eight rebounds from senior Elgin Brown.

The first half of the contest was tight, featuring 12 lead changes and three ties, with no team leading by more than six points. In a see-saw contest the Cougars jumped out to their largest lead as senior Anthony Gibson knocked down a trey for a six point advantage with just under two minutes to go in the half (33-27). Gibson scored all nine of his points from behind the arc, connecting on 3-4 from long range. Burton (pictured left) and junior Kyle Latorre each chipped in eight points, while Sanborn led all scorers in the opening stanza with 10 points, as the Cougars took a 35-33 halftime lead.

The Roadrunners surged out of the break and were able to take the lead for good just under three minutes into the period.  Thiel had a put-back layup to tie the game at 37-all, and the Roadrunners used a 7-0 run to go ahead seven with just over 16 minutes remaining. The Cougars battled back and cut the deficit to four after a Burton three pointer with 9:31 remaining, but the Roadrunners ended the game on a 16-5 run to close out the contest. The Roadrunners were able to shoot 45 percent from the field in the second half, compared to the Cougars, who shot 25 percent during the second stanza.

The Cougars return to action Saturday, January 26th as they take on New Jersey City University at 3 p.m. The Roadrunners will be in action Saturday as well as they travel to Ewing to take on The College of New Jersey at 3 p.m.
