Men’s Hoops Completes Last-Minute Comeback in ECAC Quarterfinal

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (3/5/14) – Senior Mike Burton scored 28 points with the help of seven hits from behind the arc as the Kean University men's basketball team came back three different times – including once with 1:22 remaining – to win a 73-67 ECAC Quarterfinal matchup with Mount Saint Mary College.

We'll begin with the final heroics: With Kean trailing by one, Kyle Latorre hit two huge free throws with 1:22 to go to put the Cougars up one. The defense then forced a turnover and Burton (pictured left) fed Fuller for a layup that bumped the lead up to three with just under a minute remaining.

Tom Soulias came up with another steal on the next possession, and Ali Mix and Xavier Fuller hit free throws down the stretch to ensure the Kean victory.

Fuller finished with a double-double – 14 points and 10 rebounds – while Latorre led the team with 12 boards. Fellow senior Ali Mix had 19 points, four assists and three steals.

Soulias led the team with six assists on the night.

Both teams hit an even dozen treys and shot nearly identically from the floor. The difference came in the amount of possesions; the Knights  committed four more turnovers and the Cougars pulled down four more rebounds. Those extra opportunities with the ball proved to be the difference.

Joe Henian led Mt. St. Mary with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Kean will advance to the semifinals of the ECAC Metro Tournament against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday. Game time and location will be announced shortly.
