Men’s Basketball Falls in ECAC Metro Championship Game

Staten Island, N.Y. (3/9/14)- Xavier Fuller led all scorers with 18 points, but it was not enough as the Kean University Men's Basketball team fell to host College of Staten Island 74-71 in the ECAC Metro NY/NJ Championship game on Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins jumped out to an early 11-4 lead, with Jon Chadwick-Myers connecting twice from behind the arc. The Cougars were able to answer later in the half, going on an 8-0 run; Kyle Latorre (pictured left) scored on a layup, and Mike Burton and Ali Mix each recorded a trey during the run.

After battling back and forth for the next several minutes, the Cougars grabbed the lead with 7:30 remaining on a three-pointer by Burton. Mike Summerer was a huge spark off the bench, recording seven points, while Latorre had five points and six rebounds in the opening stanza. Javon Cox and Kevin King paced the Dolphins with eight points in the opening 20 minutes.

The Cougars were able to stretch their halftime lead to 11 after a three-point basket by Fuller with 12:21 remaining.

But from there the Dolphins embarked on a 17-7 run, capped off by Chadwick-Myers connecting on a three with 4:26 remaining. They were able to hold off the Cougars down the stretch, with tournament MVP Bloochy Magloire connecting on two free throws to push the lead to three with 10 seconds remaining. The Cougars had one last opportunity to tie the game and force overtime, but a contested three pointer would not fall.

Mix finished the game with 11 points and five assists, while Burton finished with 12 points and Latorre finished with seven points and nine rebounds as they, along with Fuller, closed out their collegiate careers, ending the season with a 16-13 record. Chadwick-Myers finished with 16 and Magloire finished with 15 for the Dolphins, who end the season 27-3.
