Soulias Scores 31 in Men’s Hoops Opener

UNION, N.J. (11/14/15) – Senior Tommy Soulias scored a game-high 31 points, but the Kean University men's basketball fell to Marymount University 76-68 on Saturday in both teams' season-openers.

Four different Saints – Danny Ferry, D'Ondre Stockman, Dmitri Rucker and Rick Narcisse – were in double figures for Marymount, who made 25-of-52 shot from the floor.

Kean found itself trailing by 10 at halftime.  Ferry hit four three-pointers for the Saints in the first half, and Marymount was shooting 52 percent from the floor as a team. Soulias led the Cougars with 14 points at the break.

Midway through the second period, Kean was outpacing Marymount and had cut the lead all the way down to five with 7:47 to go. But right there the Saints launched an 8-0 run that bumped their cushion back up to 13 and end the hopes of a Cougar comeback.

Soulias also paced Kean with eight rebounds, while Kevin Grek (pictured left) led the team with four steals and three assists. Justin Watson had the only Cougar block of the game and pulled down seven boards.

The Cougars did well defensively and forced 14 turnovers. In addition to Grek's four steals, Mike Diamond and Soulias both had three and Jodrell Thompson had two.

Rucker led all players with 14 rebounds and also picked up two blocks. Ferry finished with 21 points.

The Cougars will return to action on Monday when they host Baruch College in a 7 p.m. game inside Harwood Arena.
