Union, N.J. (1/6/18) – The Kean University held the advantage for 29+ minutes as they picked up their first win of the new year by the final of 92-78 on Saturday afternoon against visiting Rutgers-Camden.
Rookie Adrian Baucum led Kean (4-9, 2-5 NJAC) with 19 points as six Cougars finished the game in double figures. Isaac Destin led all players with a double-double 32 points and 13 rebounds in 30 minutes of action as Rutgers-Camden fell to 2-11 and 0-7 in the league.
The first half featured three lead changes and two ties with the Cougars finishing the half with their largest lead of the day at that point with 11 (43-32). The Scarlet Raptors kept pace for the first 10 minutes and after see-sawing for the next two Kean took the lead on a Micah Kerr layup.
Baucum led the Cougars with 11 points off the bench in the first 20 minutes of action. Stephen Strom added eight points in 18 minutes as both teams had an identical 17 rebounds in the half.
Kean held their halftime advantage throughout the entire second half, pushing their lead out to as many as 24 on a Kennan Williams Jr. trey (one of 13 for Kean on the afternoon) with five minutes to go in the contest.
Rutgers-Camden had to short runs in the closing minutes (8-0 and 7-0), but Kean was able to hold their double-digit lead.
The Scarlet Raptors outrebounded the Cougars 37-30 with both teams shooting just around 50% in the day (Kean 50, RUC 49). Kean capitalized off turnovers, scoring 31 points on the day.
DeAndre Thomas finished with 16 points and four rebounds while Strom added 13 with four assists.
For Rutgers-Camden, Anthony Harris contributed with 19 points, seven assists, and five rebounds.
Kean head to the road to take on William Paterson University on Wednesday, January 10th at 8 p.m.
