EWING, N.J. (1/20/18)- Keenan Williams Jr. and Justin Watson combined for 34 points as the Kean University men's basketball team fell to the College of New Jersey in overtime, 78-73 on Saturday afternoon.
Randy Walko finished with 25 points, including making the game tying layup with 1.6 seconds remaining to force overtime, as the Lions improve to 14-3 overall and 9-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Williams Jr and Watson each poured in 17 points apiece for the Cougars who fall to 5-13 overall and 3-8 in the NJAC.
After trailing for the entire first half, Kean opened the second stanza with an 18-2 run over the opening six minutes to take a 50-41 lead with 14:06 to play. The Lions responded with a 18-4 run over the next 8:49 to regain the lead and take a 59-54 advantage with 4:01 remaining.
The Cougars were clutch down the stretch, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor during a 13-2 run. Watson made two three pointers during the run, including knocking one down to give Kean a 65-61 lead with 1:14 to play. Williams Jr. and DeAndre Thomas would both go 1-for-2 from the charity stripe as Kean extended their lead to 67-61 and forced TCNJ to call a timeout with 21 seconds remaining.
Walko scored the final five points for TCNJ as the Lions forced the game into an extra session. In the extra session, the Lions stretched their lead to 74-69 with 2:28 remaining, before a Thomas jumper and a Carry Saturne layup cut the TCNJ lead to 74-73 with 1:11 remaining. This would be the closest Kean would get as the Lions salted the game away from the free throw line.
Eric Murdock Jr. and Ryan Jensen both totaled 12 points for TCNJ. Saturne totaled seven points, while Michael Summerer grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss.
Head Coach Rob Kruzinsky and the Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24th, hosting the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark at 8:00 p.m.
