PATCHAGUE, N.Y. (4/22/17) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team topped Saint Joseph's College of Long Island 16-12 on Saturday to book a ticket to next week's Skyline Conference Playoffs. The Cougars are 5-4 in the conference with the postseason set to begin on Saturday.
The playoff field and seedings will be announced by the conference shortly, once all league games are completed.
Brian Mills (pictured left) scored six times on Saturday and led the Cougars with three assists to continue his torrid home stretch of the season. Kean was trailing 4-3 after one quarter of play but exploded for six second-period goals to take the lead for good.
Mills got the second-period party started by earning his hat trick 12:42 into the second quarter, knotting the game at four with an assist from Tom Kelly. Then, he returned the favor as Kelly gave Kean the lead one minute later.
The Eagles later tied the game at six, but Mike Snellen started another string of three unanswered goals to give Kean the lead for good.
The contest remained tight throughout the third quarter, but the Cougars put it on ice at the start of the fourth with five consecutive goals in less than six minutes to pull away for the win.
Kelly and Snellen finished with five points (2G, 3A) each.
Ryan Sieb earned the victory in goal by making nine saves.
Josh Shaw and Brandon Riley both scored three times for St. Joe's.
Kean is locked in as the Skyline's No. 5 seed and will travel to No. 4 seed Farmingdale State College to play in the opening round of the Skyline Championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. The team may also add a regular season game to the schedule to be played on Wednesday.
