Men's Soccer Tops Rowan in OT, 2-1

Union, N.J. (10/21/11) – Freshman Alexander Fernandez scored the game-winner with three and a half minutes to go in overtime as the Kean University men's soccer team defeated visiting Rowan University, 2-1, Friday evening.

Fernandez broke the one-all tie after breaking by a defender and hitting a hard shot on the run to the lower right hand corner after rookie Sheldon Palmer feed him the ball from the 40 yard line.

With the win Kean improves to 10-5-2 this season while the Profs drop to 7-5-3.

Most of the action took place early in the matchup as Rowan jumped on top 1-0 just 1:22 into the game as freshman Christian Fountain corralled the ball around a defender in front of the net off a header served into the box by sophomore Nick Bolton.  The Cougars answered just six minutes later as Palmer fired off a shot on a breakaway that was originally saved by keeper Ryan Gill, but the rebound bounced out and Palmer (pictured left) fired off another shot into the empty net for the score.

Kean held a 25-13 advantage in shots while Rowan held a slight 7-6 edge in corner kicks on the night.

Keepers Nick Pavlichko and Tyler Callahan combined for the win for Kean while Gill tallied six saves in the loss for Rowan.

Kean returns to action on Sunday when they travel to the University of Rochester while Rowan travels to Medgar Evers College on Monday evening.
