UNION, N.J. (10/24/12) – Senior Michael Encarnacion converted two penalty kicks, as the William Paterson University men's soccer team used three first half goals to pull away and top Kean University, 4-1 in NJAC action Wednesday night.
Encarnacion opened the scoring at the 26:17 mark of the first half, converting the first of his two penalty kicks after the Cougars committed a foul in the box. A little under eight minutes later, freshman midfielder Mike Conte knocked in a rebound off an Andrew Tauriello header that was served into the box on an initial free kick try by David Chase. Encarnacion converted his second penalty kick of the match at 38:16 of the first half.
The Cougars (9-10, 4-5 NJAC) got on the board in the 51st minute as sophomore Erickson Simeon headed in a pass from teammate Pat Foley. In the 89th minute, senior midfielder David Chase scored from 37 yards out on a free kick to close out the scoring.
Santiago Mesa made four saves for the Pioneers (8-8-1, 4-4-1, NJAC) while Junior Tyler Callahan made five saves.
The Cougars qualified for the NJAC tournament as the #6 seed, and will play at #3 seeded Rutgers-Newark on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Cougars defeated the Scarlet Raiders 2-1 on September 19th. WP earns the #4 seed and will host #5 Rowan University on Saturday.
