Newark, N.J. (10/27/12) - Junior Steven Fawzy headed in the golden goal with just 3:18 left in the first overtime to lift Rutgers-Newark to a 1-0 victory over Kean University in the opening round of the NJAC Tournament.
The third-seeded Scarlet Raiders (14-7), who established a new program record for victories in a season, are scheduled to take on second-seeded Rutgers-Camden (14-2-2) on Tuesday night at 7 in Camden – if Tropical Storm Sandy does not force a postponement.
The Cougars (9-11), who played toe-to-toe with the Raiders throughout the match, conclude the 2012 season.
Sophomore Edgar Abreu delivered a perfect cross from just inside the left sideline to the middle of the box. Fawzy got to the ball just ahead of the grasp of Kean senior goalkeeper John Londono, heading the ball to the middle of the net within inches of the grasping Cougar keeper.
Londono and Rutgers-Newark freshman goalkeeper Matt Broomall were superlative with Londono posting 10 saves to Broomall's three. Broomall posted his eighth shutout of the season.
In a well-played contest, the Raiders forged an 18-11 edge in shots by out-shooting the visitors, 11-7, in the second half. Each team took three corner kicks. The Raiders put all six of their first-half shots on goal, but Londono denied each attempt.
In overtime, Cougar sophomore forward Erickson Simeon had a shot blocked in the 95th minute and Kean senior Kharee Winslow fired a shot wide left in the 96th before Fawzy put away the Raiders only attempt in the extra period.
