Men's Volleyball Splits in Day Two of Golden Dome Classic

Newark, N.J. (1/26/13) – The Kean University men's volleyball team split in the final day of action at the Golden Dome Classic, topping Cairn University and falling to #1 Springfield College.

In the opener, the Cougars (1-2) fell to top ranked Springfield College, 3-0 (13-25, 18-25, 11-25), while rebounding in the nightcap, defeating Cairn University (formerly Philadelphia Biblical University) in straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 26-24).

Senior Steve Vahalla led Kean with a combined 28 kills on the afternoon, while sophomore setter Ron Dunn tallied 58 assists, 13 digs and six total blocks.

Against Springfield, Vahalla led all players with 12 kills.

In Kean's win over Cairn, Vahalla again led all players with 16 kills while Dunn (pictured left) and sophomore Kyle Farley added five blocks apiece.  The Cougars combined for 10.5 blocks in the match.

The Cougars only trailed by one point twice in the first two sets of the match, before battling to a tight matchup in what turned out to be the final set of the match.  Tied at 24-all, Kean put the match away with a service ace from Vahalla and a block off the wall of sophomores Ed Jedziniak, Mike Scheuermann and John Cunningham.

Kean opens their home schedule on Tuesday, January 29th when they host New Jersey Institute of Technology at 7:30 p.m.
