PITTSFORD, N.Y. (1/18/19)- Jake Milnazik finished with 18 kills and posted a .314 hitting percentage over two matches as the #4 Kean University men's volleyball team opened the 2019 campaign with back-to-back sweeps of Elmira College and St. John Fisher College at the Cardinal Classic on Friday evening.
Kean 3, Elmira 0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-23)
Milnazik and Dylan Flor both led the Cougars (1-0) with eight kills apiece as Kean opened the 2019 season with a straight-sets sweep of the Soaring Eagles (0-1). The Cougars dominated on the offensive and defensive side with a .367 hitting percentage and 15 total blocks. Steven Zarzycki added six kills and hit .750, while Jay Bynum totaled four kills and four blocks. Ian Capp handed out 28 assists and finished with three digs.
Jose Malave totaled eight kills for Elmira in the loss.
Kean 3, St. John's Fisher 0 (25-19, 25-22, 27-25)
Milnazik tallied 10 kills, four digs and two block assists as Kean (2-0) swept the host Cardinals (0-2) in the nightcap of their opening evening in Western NY. The sweep saw the Cougars hit above .200 in each set and .324 for the match. Bynum totaled seven, while Flor and Zarzycki both tallied six kills apiece.
After a dominating first set and a tight second set, Kean found themselves in a four-point deficit late in set three. The Cougars trailed 20-16 before Milnazik served for four straight points to propel Kean back in front 21-20. The match eventually entered extra points, while a Capp block and a Bynum kill put things away for good.
Capp handed out 31 assists, while Jonathan Meyer collected eight digs.
Josh Bigford totaled eight kills and five digs in the loss for St. John Fisher.
Head Coach Charlie Ginex and the #4 Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Sat. Jan. 19th, in Rochester, N.Y. against the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College at 7:00 p.m.
