UNION, N.J. (1/25/19)- Steven Zarzycki totaled 14 kills over two matches as the Kean University men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2019 Clash at Kean.
#10 North Central 3, #4 Kean 0 (23-25, 23-25, 25-17)
The Cougars dropped their first match of the season after being swept by nationally ranked North Central College from Illinois. The Cardinals (5-3) posted a .339 hitting percentage for the match while hitting .409 in both the first and third sets. Flor led the Cougars (3-1) with eight kills, four blocks assists, and three aces.
The first two sets were extremely close with both being decided in the final points. The opening set saw Kean trail 24-21 before back-to-back errors pulled the Cougars to within 24-23. A service error would ultimately give the set to the Cardinals. The second set saw Kean take a late 23-22 lead on a kill and ace by Flor. North Central was able to close out the set with three straight attacking errors from the Cougars.
The final set saw NCC put together a 17-9 run after an early 8-8 tie.
Jacob Zemba finished with 15 kills and a .458 hitting percentage for the Cardinals.
#4 Kean 3, Hunter 0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-23)
In the nightcap, Kean (4-1) bounced back with a straight-sets sweep of Hunter College (0-1). Zarzycki and Adam Casper led the way with seven kills.
In set one, Kean raced out to a 16-7 lead in the blink of an eye but Hunter used an 8-3 run to force the Cougars to call a timeout with a 19-15 advantage. The Hawks would close the deficit to 21-19 before Kean finished the set with a 4-1 run that included three Hawk errors.
The second set saw the Cougars attempt to open things up with a 7-2 run for a 14-8 lead. Hunter hung around for the remainder of the set, pulling to within one at 22-21 before three straight points closed it out.
The final set remained deadlocked at 23-23 before back-to-back kills from Garbowski and Zach Gerken put the set and the match to bed.
Head Coach Charlie Ginex and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Sat. Jan. 26th, against Rivier University at 1:00 p.m. and #14 Endicott College at 5:00 p.m. on the second day of the Clash at Kean.
