UNION, N.J. (4/3/19) – Dylan Flor finished with a team-high 18 kills as the #4 Kean University men's volleyball team rallied to defeat UC-Santa Cruz in a five set thriller, 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-13) on senior night.
Kamil Garbowski totaled 10 kills and hit .350 for the Cougars who improve to 22-5 overall. Raymond Cascio finished with 23 kills and 13 digs for the Banana Slugs who fall to 12-16 overall.
Santa Cruz put Kean into a deep hole after capturing the first two sets, including a .375 hitting percentage in the second set victory.
Kean battled back in thrilling third and fourth set victories as the Cougars hit .238 and .243 in both set decisions. Flor and Jay Bynum combined for 11 kills in set four alone as the game entered the deciding set.
In the fifth set, Santa Cruz opened with three straight points, before Kean used a 5-2 run to tie the game at 5-5. The Cougars and the Slugs traded points until UCSC took a 13-12 lead with a Cascio kill. Kean would end the match with three straight errors from the Banana Slugs to complete the dramatic comeback.
Bynum finished with 11 kills and three block assist, while Nico Mercadante totaled six kills and eight digs. Jake Milnazik, Ian Capp and Steven Zarzycki all tallied four kills. Capp added 48 assists and 18 digs, while Jonathan Meyer collected 15 digs.
Before the game, the coaching staff recognized seniors Mercadante, Garbowski and Nick Buseski for their hard work and dedication to the program.
Head Coach Charlie Ginex and the Cougars will return to action in New Paltz, N.Y. on Saturday, Apr. 6th, against the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz at 6:00 p.m.
