Hollyfield Homers as #18 Softball Drops Doubleheader to William Paterson

UNION, N.J. (4/14/18)- Erin Hollyfield finished 3-for-7 with a home run, four RBI's, one double and one run scored as the #18 Kean University softball team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader to William Paterson University on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1: William Paterson 5, Kean 4

Olivia Zengel went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Maria Bonfanti finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the Cougars (20-5, 5-2 NJAC) had a late rally thwarted in game one.

WPU took a 3-0 lead on a home run to center by Christine Griffith, before Kean answered with a two-RBI double by Hollyfield in the bottom half of the third. The Pioneers (18-7, 5-2 NJAC) increased their lead to 5-2 in the sixth, before the Cougars scored two more runs in the seventh on a Paterson fielding error to cut the deficit to 5-4.

That would be the closest Kean would get as Paterson was able to get the final out one batter later.

Jacqueline Riley fanned four batters and fell to 7-3 overall.

GAME 2: William Paterson 10, Kean 6

Hollyfield went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI's and a run scored, while Riley finished 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Pioneers (19-7, 6-2) completed the sweep of the Cougars (20-6, 5-3) in the nightcap.

Hollyfield would be responsible for both Cougar runs through the first four innings with an RBI single through the left side in the first and a solo home run in the fourth. In between both of Kean runs, the Pioneers exploded for seven runs on four hits in the second to take a 9-2 lead.

Kean was able to get some runs back in the sixth with four runs on five hits that included RBI's from Riley, Katie Debbie, and Kacie Worswick. Despite the late runs, the deficit was too great to overcome and WPU completed the sweep.

Kaitlin Stahlbrand struck out a batter and fell to 7-3 overall, while Amanda Ross made a relief appearance pitching the final 5 2/3 innings.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Sun. Apr. 15th, in Glassboro, N.J. against the nationally-ranked Profs of Rowan University for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
