UNION, N.J. (5/1/18)- A two-run, ninth-inning rally propelled Ramapo College to a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Kean University softball team on the opening day of the 2018 NJAC Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
The third-seeded Roadrunners improve to 24-11 overall and will advance to a matchup with the fifth-seeded Ospreys of Stockton University at Montclair State on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The fourth-seeded Cougars fall to 26-11 overall and will take on the top-seeded Lions of the College of New Jersey in an elimination game for Kean at MSU on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
Kean scored three runs on four hits over the first two innings as the Cougars took a commanding 3-0 lead entering the third. Kean scored two runs in the first on RBI groundouts by Cayleen Rizo and Erin Hollyfield that drove in Julie Raba and Olivia Zengel. Raba would make it 3-0 with an RBI single that scored Samantha Krakower in the second.
Ramapo answered with single runs in the second and third innings to pull Kean's lead to 3-2 entering the fourth inning. The Roadrunners eventually tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out RBI single from Jackie Howarth that scored Carli Egan and send the contest into extra innings.
The game remained 3-3 into the ninth when Krakower scored on a throw down to second base for the 4-3 lead. Ramapo rallied in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back RBI's from Egan and Howarth.
Jacqueline Riley fanned three batters in the loss for Kean.
