Riley Homers as Softball Sweeps DeSales in Season Opener

UNION, N.J. (2/23/19)- Jacqueline Riley went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun and tallied a victory in the circle as the Kean University softball team swept a season opening doubleheader with DeSales University on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Kean 8, DeSales 3

Caroline Ratti and Cayleen Rizo both went 2-for-4, while Erin Hollyfield and Maddie Carlson each tallied two RBI's as the Cougars (1-0) rallied with a five run bottom of the fifth for their first win of the season.

Kean actually took a 2-0 lead in the second, when Maria Bonfanti hit an RBI single to score Carlson and Samantha Krakower doubled down the left field line before scoring on a double steal with Bonfanti.

The Bulldogs (0-1) answered with three runs in the top of the fifth for a 3-2 lead. The bottom half of the inning saw Kean score five runs on five hits to take a commanding, 7-3 lead. Hollyfield and Carlson each drove in two runs, while Julie Raba added another.

Ratti started off the inning with a single and then was driven home by Raba. Olivia Zengel reached on an error and eventually scored with Raba when Hollyfield smacked a two RBI single.  Hollyfield would come home herself two batters later, when Carlson hit a two RBI double to score her and Rizo.

Kean added an insurance run in the sixth, when Rizo doubled to score Zengel.

Taryn DiGiacomo struck out six batters in the complete game victory.

Game 2: Kean 3, DeSales 0

Kean did all its damage in the bottom of the third with three runs on three hits. Zengel and Raba both singled to get on and then advanced a base on a double steal. Rizo would drive in Zengel on a sacrifice fly and Raba would steal home after the DeSales defense was caught napping.  Riley would step to the plate next and hit a bomb to left center for just the second homerun of her career.
