#9 Softball Extends Winning Streak to 14 Games with Doubleheader Sweep of Gwynedd-Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. (3/28/19) – Olivia Zengel went a perfect 7-for-7 with three RBI's as the #9 Kean University softball team extended their winning streak to 14 games with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Gwynedd-Mercy University on Thursday afternoon.

Game 1: #9 Kean 8, Gwynedd-Mercy 3

O. Zengel went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Cayleen Rizo finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored as the Cougars (17-1) tallied eight runs on 14 hits in the game one victory.

Kean scored three runs over the first three innings with RBI's by Jacqueline Riley and Julie Raba. The Griffins (6-11) tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the third with a three-run homer by Lauren Waller.

Caroline Ratti broke the tie in the top of the next inning on an RBI single that scored Gabriella Fredette. O. Zengel added another run in the sixth with her lone RBI of the game that drove in Maria Bonfanti. Kean increased their advantage to 8-3 in the seventh with three runs on three hits, including Rizo smacking a two run RBI double to score Sarah Zengel and Grace Cofino.

Taryn DiGiacomo improved to 10-1 in the circle with three strikeouts in the complete game victory.

Game 2: #9 Kean 5, Gwynedd-Mercy 1

The Zengel cousins went a combined 6-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI's as the Cougars (18-1) completed the doubleheader sweep with 10 runs on five hits in the game two victory.

Gwynedd-Mercy (6-12) actually led 1-0 entering the fifth, when Kean tallied four runs on five hits including RBI's from Ratti, O. Zengel, Riley and Rizo.  S. Zengel led off with a double before being driven in on a double by Ratti. O. Zengel would send Ratti home on an RBI single, before crossing the plate herself two batters later when Riley singled to right field. Rizo finished the scoring for the inning when her RBI single brought in Raba.

Riley remains unbeaten (7-0) in the circle with five strikeouts in the complete game victory.

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 30th, hosting the Profs of Rowan University for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
