UNION, N.J. (3/30/19) – Cayleen Rizo went 2-for-6 with a homerun and two runs scored as the #9 Kean University softball team had their14 game winning streak snapped after a doubleheader sweep by Rowan University on Saturday afternoon.
Rowan 9, Kean 7
The opening game of the doubleheader turned out to be an absolute slugfest with a combined 16 runs on 19 hits. Rizo finished 2-for-3 with a homerun and two runs scored, while Olivia Zengel went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Cougars (18-2, 0-1 NJAC) failed to complete their comeback in the two run loss.
Rowan (13-6, 1-0 NJAC) exploded to a 5-0 lead in a blink of an eye over the first three innings. Kean responded with six runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. Gabriella Fredette, Maria Bonfanti, O. Zengel, Julie Raba and Jacqueline Riley all recorded an RBI during the monster inning.
The Cougars wouldn't hold the advantage for long as the Profs tied the contest at 6-6 in the fifth with an RBI double by Morgan Zane. Zane helped Rowan increase their lead to 9-6 with a two-run homer in the seventh.
Rizo would gain back a run in the seventh with a solo homer, but Kean would end the game by lining into a double play.
Taryn DiGiacomo struck out four batters in the complete game loss.

The second game of the afternoon was night and day compared to the opener as the Cougars (18-3, 0-2 NJAC) only recorded one hit in the shutout loss to the Profs (14-6, 2-0 NJAC).
O. Zengel tallied the lone hit for Kean to break up Lauren Shannon's no-hitter. Despite the strong pitching from the Profs, the game entered the sixth scoreless before back-to-back RBI's put Rowan in front 2-0. The Profs added two more runs in the seventh with a two run homer.
Riley takes her first loss of the season (7-1) after tossing a complete game.
Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Sun. Mar. 31st, hosting the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
