#23 Softball Sweeps Rutgers-Newark

Union, N.J. (4/10/19)Taryn DiGiacomo tossed a one-hitter as the Kean University softball team swept Rutgers-Newark in run-rule fashion in NJAC action on Wednesday afternoon.

The #23 Cougars earned a 9-1 win in five innings in the opener while blanking the Scarlet Raiders 8-0 also in five innings in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Kean 9, Rutgers-Newark 1 (5 innings)

The Cougars (24-5, 4-4 NJAC) picked up three quick runs in the first two innings of action with Julie Raba and Maria Bonfanti collecting RBI singles.

Rutgers-Newark (10-18, 3-5 NJAC) erased the shutout with back-to-back doubles in the fourth frame, the later coming off the bat of Julie Contravo for the day's only RBI. 

Kean earned the run-rule decision with a six spot in the bottom of the fifth.  Caroline Ratti delivered a two RBI single while Sarah Zengel and Cayleen Rizo later followed with RBI singles.  Gabriella Fredette pushed the run-rule into effect with a two RBI single to end the inning.

Fredette was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored while Ratti was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Jacqueline Riley improved to 10-1 on the season as she tossed all five innings allowing one run and three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Game 2 – Kean 8, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 innings)

The Cougars pounded out eight runs, seven in the first inning alone, on 12 hits.

Kean collected RBI hits from Riley, S. Zengel, Rizo and Fredette while Ratti plated two to cap the first frame.  With two outs in the third, Raba pushed the run total to eight with an RBI single, scoring Ratti who reached on a bunt single.

Jaclyn Arute recorded the game's only hit for Rutgers-Newark leading off the fourth inning.

DiGiacomo (12-3) fanned four and walked no one.

Offensively S. Zengel was 3-for-3 with a run scored and RBI while Ratti, Fredette and Olivia Zengel each were 2-for-3.

Kean returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden.
