UNION, N.J. (4/20/19) – Caroline Ratti and Cayleen Rizo both hit homeruns as the #19 Kean University softball team extended their conference winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep of Montclair State University on Senior Day.
Kean 9, Montclair State 6
Ratti finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Olivia Zengel went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored as the Cougars (29-5, 9-4 NJAC) survived a late comeback by the Red Hawks (26-9, 7-6 NJAC) in game one.
Kean scored nine runs over the first four innings, including a seven run bottom of the fourth that was highlighted by a two run homer from Rizo and a two RBI double by O. Zengel. The Cougars were down to their last out, which would have ended the contest by mercy rule, but MSU proceeded to score five runs in the inning and cut the Cougars advantage to 9-5 entering the sixth.
The Red Hawks added another run in the sixth with a solo homerun. That would be the closest Montclair would get as Taryn DiGiacomo made a relief appearance and earned the first save of her career.
Kean 10, Montclair State 7
Julie Raba finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Rizo went 2-for-3 with a run scored as the Cougars (30-5, 10-4 NJAC) used a late sixth inning rally to defeat Montclair State (26-10, 7-7 NJAC).
Kean jumped out to a 5-1 lead after a Ratti two run homer in the second. MSU rallied on the back of two homeruns and a four run fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead in the fifth.
The Cougars didn't go quietly as they scored four runs on four hits in the sixth, including RBI's from O. Zengel, Raba and Erin Hollyfield.
Kaitlin Stahlbrand earned the victory after making a relief appearance.
Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 23rd, hosting the Ospreys of Stockton University for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
