Ratti Homers Three Times in Doubleheader Sweep of Stockton

Union, N.J. (4/23/19)Caroline Ratti was 4-for-7 with three homeruns and a double to lift the Kean University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Stockton University by the finals of 8-6 and 5-4 on Tuesday.

Game 1 – Kean 8, Stockton 6

The Cougars (32-5, 12-4 NJAC) raced out to a 7-0 lead with a seven spot in the third inning.  Ratti led off the inning with a solo shot.  Kean then collected RBI singles from Erin Hollyfield, Cayleen Rizo and Jacqueline Riley, jumping out to a 4-0 lead.  Gabriella Fredette later lofted a sacrifice fly and Ratti rounded out the scoring with her second at-bat in the inning, this time a two RBI double.

Stockton (20-16, 6-8 NJAC) quickly got into the mix with four runs in their half of the fifth.  Lilly James lined a two run homer to left center and Morgan DiVello and Casey Schieda later followed with an RBI single and RBI double respectively to cut the deficit to three.

The Ospreys weren't done and closed the gap to just one as Liani Ortiz started off the sixth frame with a solo shot and Carli Shaw singled to center.

Kean would wiggle out of trouble by adding a single run in the bottom of the same inning on an RBI single from relief pitcher Kaitlin Stahlbrand.

Stahlbrand earned her first save of the year after tossing two and a third innings.  Riley earned the win to improve to 14-1.

Game 2 – Kean 5, Stockton 4

It was close affair but Kean never trailed in the contest.  Ratti got right back into the swing of things as she homered in her first at-bat off the field house for a quick 1-0 lead.

Alexandra Cosenzo responded with a homerun of her own to lead off the fourth and knot the game at one-all.  Ratti put Kean back on top in the same frame with a two run blast (3-1).

The teams exchanged single runs in the fifth, both on RBI doubles (Schneida, Maria Bonfanti).

Julie Raba crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth for what would be the winning run off a groundout.

The Ospreys threatened in their last at-bat, scoring two and loading the bases with just one out.  Taryn DiGiacomo worked out of the jam with two pop ups to end the game.

DiGiacomo improves to 15-3 on the year in the complete game effort, striking out seven.

Meg Murzello was 3-for-3 for Stockton while Sarah Zengel, Samantha Krakower and Bonfanti each had two hits for Kean.

The Cougars wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Ramapo College for an NJAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
