UNION, N.J. (4/30/19) – Taryn DiGiacomo struck out five batters and only allowed three hits in the 4-0 complete game shutout victory over Ramapo College in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
Cayleen Rizo collected a homerun and two RBIs for the third seed Cougars who improve to 35-5 overall and advance to face second seed Rowan University at the College of New Jersey on Friday May 3rd. Kendra Decker went 2-for-3 for the Roadrunners who fall to 22-13 overall and will face top seed TCNJ on Friday in an elimination game for Ramapo.
Kean collected single runs in the third and fourth innings with bases loaded walks from Erin Fitzsimmons. Rizo earned the RBI in the third and Jacqueline Riley tallied the RBI in the fourth as Kean took a 2-0 lead into the fifth.
In the fifth, the Cougars tallied two more runs on four hits for the 4-0 advantage. Rizo led off with a solo shot down the left field line for the fifth time this season and the 15th of her career. After a Roadrunners pitching change, Caroline Ratti singled through the left side to drive in Samantha Krakower and the Cougars final run of the afternoon.
DiGiacomo improves to 17-3 overall and tosses her 19th complete game of the season. The Cougars, who extended their current winning streak to 13 games, also broke the single season record for team runs, which was currently held by the 1987 squad with 283. Kean came into today's contest sitting at 281 and needing just three runs to break the record.
Rizo also moves into a tie for third all-time in career RBI's at 118 and currently sits in second place all-time in homeruns at 15.
Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action in Ewing, N.J. on Friday, May 3rd, against Rowan University at 3:00 p.m.
