EWING, N.J. (5/3/19) – A two-run walkoff homerun propelled the second seed Rowan University to a 7-5 extra innings victory over the third seeded Kean University softball team on the second day of the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament hosted by the College of New Jersey.
Carly Anderson finished 2-for-5 with four RBI's for the Profs who improve to 30-10 overall. Gabriella Fredette tallied three RBI's for the Cougars who fall to 35-6 overall.
Kean was the first to light up the scoreboard in the second after Fredette earned an RBI on a bases loaded walk by Lauren Shannon. The Profs took their first lead of the game at 3-1 after a three-run double by Anderson in the bottom half of the inning. Fredette collected two more RBI's in the fourth with a double to left that bounced off the fielder's glove and rolled towards the wall. The sophomore would be driven in by the NJAC Player of the Year Caroline Ratti on the very next at-bat as the Cougars regained the advantage at 4-3.
Kean added another run just two batters later as Julie Raba drove home Ratti for the 5-3 lead. Rowan answered in the sixth with two runs on three hits to tie everything up at 5-5. After two scoreless innings, the Profs ended the game in the bottom of the ninth with the walkoff homerun to centerfield.
Taryn DiGiacomo struck out four batters and threw 162 pitches and as the junior fell to 17-4 overall.
Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Saturday May 4th in Ewing, N.J. against the fifth seeded Red Hawks of Montclair State University in an elimination game beginning at 12:00 p.m.
