UNION, N.J. (5/10/19) – The #13 Kean University softball team tied the program record for victories in a season with the 2-0 victory over Endicott College on the opening day of the NCAA Softball Championships Union Regional
Taryn DiGiacomo improved to 18-4 in the circle and struck out four batters in the complete game victory for the Cougars who improve to 38-6 overall. Olivia Odermatt finished 2-for-2 for the Gulls who fall to 32-6 overall.
Kean advances to tomorrow's winner's bracket game against the #9 Captains of Christopher Newport University at 12:00 p.m., while Endicott enters the elimination bracket facing the College of Staten Island at 2:30 p.m.
The Cougars crossed the dish in the first when Caroline Ratti was driven in by a Julie Raba RBI to left. Ratti led-off the game with a single, moved to second on a stolen base, before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Zengel. That stolen base tied the season record and moved her into third all-time in the same category.
Ratti is attempting to break her own season record that she set in 2017 while surpassing Sara Steinman (2006-09) on the career list.
Kean tallied its second run of the contest in the sixth when Cayleen Rizo went yard for the sixth time this season and the 16th of her career. The senior currently sits in second place behind the aforementioned Steinman, who holds the all-time record at 17.
The season wins record is held by the 1986 squad, which posted a 38-9 record and finished seventh at the College World Series.
Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, May 11th, against the nationally-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University in the winner's bracket game at 12 p.m.
