GLEN GARDNER, N.J. (10/17/18) - Members of the Kean University softball program volunteered at the Michele Smith charity softball clinic at Voorhees High School on Saturday, Oct. 6th.
Student-Athletes Olivia Zengel and Erin Hollyfield along with Head Coach Margie Acker, assistant coach Emily Sabo and graduate assistant Dana Knapp all gave volunteer instruction to over 60 players from ages 9 to 17. The players received detailed instruction on hitting, pitching, throwing, fielding and base running.
The proceeds from the clinic benefited Make-A-Wish New Jersey, a non-profit organization that grants wishes to children battling cancer and other chronic diseases.
Smith, a former two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, graduated from Voorhees HS in 1985 after compiling a 46-6 record in the circle, while being a three-time All-State selection. She took her talents to Oklahoma State University and totaled an 82-20 record with a .343 batting average. The Hunterdon County native played professionally in Japan from 1993 until 2008 and won eight JPL championships. The current ESPN analyst is a member of the Oklahoma and ASA Softball Hall of Fame.
