Patrick Lifts Kean Past Ithaca, 65-52
UNION, N.J. (11/22/09) - Junior forward Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, N.J.) had 18 points and a career-high 22 rebounds to lead the Kean University women's basketball team to a 65-52 win over Ithaca College to capture THE ROCK Cougar Classic Championship on Sunday afternoon.
Patrick (pictured right) added three assists, two blocks and one steal and hit 9-of-12 shots from the floor to capture Most Valuable Player honors for the Cougars (2-1).
For the Bombers (2-2), senior guard Katherine Bixby (Phiadelphia, Pa.) had 10 points and five assists.
After the Bombers scored the first bucket of the game, Kean took the lead for good on a layup by Patrick and would take a 17-10 lead with 11:43 remaining in the first half on a jumper by senior guard Alysha Taylor (Galloway, N.J.). The Bombers used a 9-3 run to pull within 20-19 before rookie Naimah Clemons (Newark, N.J.) ignited a 17-1 run with a three-pointer, as Clemons scored 10-of-her 15 points in that run to give Kean a 37-20 lead with less than three minutes to go in the half.
Ithaca scored five straight points and would trail 42-30 at the break, as Bixby knocked down a pair of free throws after getting fouled as the half ended.
Clemons (pictured left) scored 13 points in the first half, while senior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) added 11 points and three assists. Patrick scored six points and grabbed 10 defensive boards in the opening half, while junior forward Elissa Klie (Wyckoff, N.J.) had nine points and two assists for the Bombers.
The Cougars opened the half on a 11-2 run to extend the lead to 21 points at 53-32 with 13:57 to go in the game before Ithaca trimmed the deficit back to single digits at 57-50 following an 18-4 run over a seven minute span.
Patrick grabbed an offensive board and made the putback with 5:34 remaining to give the Cougars the nine-point edge and she added two baskets in the final minute of the game to seal the 13-point victory.
Beyruti finished with 16 points, including four three-pointers, and added five assists and two steals for the Cougars. Senior Danielle Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) chipped in with eight points and 13 rebounds.
Klie scored 11 points and added six rebounds, three assists and three steals for Ithaca, while junior guard Blaire Moldenhauer (Albany, Mo.) nearly had a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, November 24, when they travel to John Jay College in a men's and women's doubleheader. The women's game tips-off at 5 p.m.
