UNION, N.J. (1/9/13) – Sophomore Jade Howard scored 15 points and poured in 12 rebounds to lead five players in double figures as Rutgers-Newark defeated the Kean University women's basketball team, 69-59, on Wednesday evening.
Kean jumped out to a 10 point lead midway through the first stanza using an 11-0 run. Jones started the run with 11:52 to go on a layup and Pierre finished it with her own layup two and a half minutes later. But the Scarlet Raiders closed the half on a 16-7 run to close the gap, only giving the Cougars a halftime lead of one (28-27). Jones (pictured left) and Pierre accounted for 25 of the Cougars 28 points during the opening half, while Rutgers-Newark led a balanced attack.
The Scarlet Raiders (9-5) then controlled the second half of play, as Howard chipped in 11 of her 15 points in the second period, while junior ShaQuanna Marshall scored 10 of her 13 points in this half. The Cougars took a 52-51 lead with 4:48 remaining on back-to-back free throws from Pierre, but that would be their last lead as the Scarlet Raiders used an 18-7 run to close out the contest.
Junior Jewell Palmer had 11 points and eight rebounds, while classmate Jasmine Daniels chipped in 11 points. Senior Kyanne Sager tallied eight rebounds, and freshman Jordan Mangiafico-Chambers recorded six rebounds off the bench.
The Cougars return to action Saturday, January 12th as they travel to #12 Montclair State at 3 p.m., and return home Monday, January 14th as they take on #6 Amherst at 6 p.m. Rutgers-Newark returns to action January 12th as they host NJAC foe Rowan University at 6 p.m.
