Women’s Basketball Captures ECAC Metro Championship

Staten Island, N.Y. (3/9/14) - Tournament MVP Simone Smith had 22 points to lead the Kean University Women's Basketball team past Brooklyn College 65-53 to win the ECAC Metro Championship on Sunday night at the College of Staten Island.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 7-0, led by AnnaRose Pierre connecting on a layup and a pair of free throws, and Jaquetta Owens connecting from behind the arc. After Carissa Williams recorded a layup, the Cougars went on a 6-0 run stretching the lead to 13-2. Essence Casey pushed the Cougar lead to 16 with 1:09 remaining, giving the Cougars their biggest lead of the opening stanza.

The Cougars shot 38 percent in the first period, while the Bulldogs shot 27 percent.  Kean was led by Smith, who had 12 points and four rebounds, while Megan Campbell and Nicole Francomano paced Brooklyn with five points apiece.

The Bulldogs opened the half with a 5-0 run, and cut the deficit to four with just under 16 minutes to play, as Sarah Shanderson connected on a free throw. After battling back and forth, the Cougars exploded to stretch the lead to 14. After being held scoreless in the first period, Jazmine Davis poured in 16 in the second period, contributing down the stretch.

Smith led all scorers with 22 points, and Pierre finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars, who finished the year 18-12. Williams finished with 12 points and Campbell finished with 11 for the Bulldogs who end the year 22-7.
