Mahwah, N.J. (1/27/18) – Latice Cunningham secured the win with a lay-in in the waning seconds as the Kean University women's basketball team defeated host Ramapo College, 58-56 on Saturday afternoon.
Kean (8-11, 5-8 NJAC) did not trail in the contest but the Roadrunners (5-15, 2-11 NJAC) tied it when it mattered with 5.1 seconds on the clock in the game. The Cougars called timeout and advanced the ball to their own frontcourt setting up what would be the game-winner as Cunningham took back the inbounds pass from Lorenzah Hammer and drove the lane with a floating layup for the win.
The Cougars led or were tied for the entire first half leading by as many as six on a Danielle Oakley trey early in the second quarter (17-11). Cindy Foresta led Kean with 10 points in the first 20 minutes.
Kean pushed the advantage out to double digits and as many as 12 as Payce Lange hit one from behind the arc with 7:40 on the clock in the third quarter.
Ramapo started to chip away in the final five minutes and pulled within one on several occasions, as he team seemed to go basket for basket down the stretch. Jessica Rapasy tied it up with five seconds to go.
Cunningham finished with 16 points while Lange added 13 and four rebounds. Oakley registered 12 points, eight steals and five rebounds in the all-around effort.
Alie Wickersheim had 12 points off the bench in the loss for the Roadrunners.
Kean hosts New Jersey City University on Wednesday in their next conference matchup.
