UNION, N.J. (11/15/17)- Freshman Lorenzah Hammer finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Kean University women's basketball team dropped their season opener to Brooklyn College, 60-53 on Wednesday evening.
Chanel Jemmott finished with 16 points and 21 rebounds for the Bulldogs who improve to 1-0 overall. Payce Lange finished with 14 points and four steals for the Cougars who fall 0-1 overall.
The Bulldogs held their largest lead of the first half at 28-19 before Kean used a 12-3 run that was capped off by an Emily Dominguez three-point play with 34 seconds remaining. Kean trailed 31-30 at the break.
In the second half, Kean fought an uphill battle as Brooklyn led for most of the latter 20. Kean took their only lead of the second half on a Dominguez layup at 40-39 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter. Brooklyn increased their lead back to eight before the Cougars made a run and cut the lead to just one at 54-53 with 3:19 remaining. Despite getting close, Kean was unable to regain the advantage and the Bulldogs hung on.
Brooklyn outrebounded Kean 49-36, including 21 offensive boards. Marajiah Bacon finished with 10 points, while Dominguez totaled six points and two steals. Karen Mak finished with 14 points for Brooklyn.
Head Coach Mandy King and the Cougars will return to action on Friday, Nov. 17th, hosting the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University in the Kean Classic at 7:00 p.m.
