Union, N.J. (1/23/19) – Rutgers-Newark led wire-to-wire while defeating the Kean University women's basketball team by the final of 52-41 on Wednesday evening in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
With the loss Kean falls to 8-10 on the season and 5-6 in conference play while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 8-3 in NJAC action and 11-7 overall.
Faith Ashby was tied for the game-high in points with 15 as she played all 40 minutes of action for Rutgers-Newark. Rookie Shannon McCoy countered for the Cougars with 15 points.
Both teams struggled offensively in the contest, but it was the Scarlet Raiders who broke through first, pushing out to an 8-0 lead just under three minutes into action. The score would remain stalled for the next four plus minutes before Kean put points on the board with a bucket from Danielle Oakley.
The Cougars closed the gap to three with a layup from Payce Lange with 5:33 on the clock in the second quarter, but Rutgers-Newark responded with a short 11-2 run to finish out the first half, pushing the advantage out to double-digits and a 27-15 halftime lead.
The Scarlet Raiders continued the run after intermission and added eight more, giving them their largest lead of the day at 20 points (35-15).
The Cougars clawed their way back and brought the deficit back to single digits and closed within five with 1:36 to go on a point from the charity stripe by Keidy Laureano. But Hannah Ashby sealed the game with a trey 20 seconds later to put the game out of reach.
Lange finished with eight points for Kean while Cindy Foresta added six points and six boards. H. Ashby tallied 11 points and seven rebounds while Elisha India Cross finished the night with 10 points.
Kean returns to NJAC action on Saturday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden for a 1 p.m. matchup.
