Wayne, N.J. (2/2/19) – Junior Payce Lange netted a career-high 29 points as the Kean University women's basketball team won their third straight by defeating host William Paterson University by the final of 78-67.
The Pioneers (12-10, 8-7 NJAC) took an early lead in the contest but the Cougars (11-11, 8-7 NJAC) tied things up on four separate occasions before taking the lead for good with 2:03 to go in the first quarter. Casey Filiault recorded a trey to give Kean a 16-13 lead. Lange pushed the advantage out to double-digits (25-15) early in the second quarter, but the Pioneers used a short run at the end of the period to bring the deficit back down to single digits as Kean headed into the break with a 38-29 lead.
The third quarter belonged to the Cougars as Kean doubled up their point production (28-13). A bucket from rookie Shannon McCoy gave Kean their largest lead of the afternoon, 25 points (66-41).
William Paterson turned things up in the final stanza, using four three-pointers to help dwindle the deficit back down to single digits in the final two minutes of action, but Lange helped ice the game with five points down the stretch.
Lange finished with five rebounds and five assists while McCoy collected 22 points. Filiault and Danielle Oakley rounded out the double-digit scorers for Kean. Julie Rovito led WP with 16 points on the afternoon.
Kean returns home to face Stockton University on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
