Union, N.J. (2/6/19) – The Kean University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire as they defeated Stockton University by the final of 79-72 on Wednesday evening for their fourth straight win.
Rookie Shannon McCoy led all players with 28 points while adding five assists as the Cougars improve to 12-11 overall and 9-7 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action. Madison Noordeloos (7-16, 4-12 NJAC) led the Ospreys as one of four players in double-digits.
Kean sprinted out to a 16-0 lead after five minutes of action. Juniors Payce Lange and Cindy Foresta each had four points in the run. The Cougars maintained a healthy lead and moved into the break with a 40-30 advantage.
Stockton used a short spurt spanning the third and fourth quarters to bring the deficit down to just four points (57-53) as Molly Collins nailed a trey with 9:03 to go in the contest. The Ospreys kept chipping and got as close as three on three separate occasions, including with just 26 seconds left on the clock on a jumper from Noordeloos. Free throws down the stretch by the Cougars helped keep Stockton at bay and seal the win.
Lange finished with 25 points and four rebounds while Collins collected 13 points.
The stat sheet was pretty similar as Kean held a slight edge in rebounds (43-37) and shooting percentage (43% to 38%), but were almost identical in fouls, turnovers, free throws and three-pointers.
Kean returns to action to take on The College of New Jersey on the road on Saturday.
