Union, N.J. (2/13/19) – Freshman Shannon McCoy recorded a new personal best 33 points but it wasn't enough as the Rowan University women's basketball team edged Kean University by the final of 82-79.
The New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament field is now set with the Cougars (12-13, 9-9 NJAC) grabbing the last spot as the sixth seed. Kean will travel to #3 Montclair State University on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off. Rowan finishes as the second seed and will enjoy a first-round bye and awaits the winner of the MSU/Kean matchup on Wednesday, February 20th.
The Profs (15-10, 13-5 NJAC) led or were tied for the entire first quarter and pushed the lead out to nine in the first minute of the second period. Kean then began a 17-3 run that turned a nine point deficit into a five point lead. Junior Payce Lange contributed six points in the span. The Cougars kept the momentum and carried the same five point lead into the break (38-33).
The Profs started the second half on a 9-0 run that gave them a share of the lead for good as the Cougars were only able to tie the contest on two occasions down the stretch.
Neither team was able to push the advantage to double-digits in the contest. The teams were almost even in rebounding with Kean holding a commanding lead in steals (24) to Rowan's 29 turnovers.
Rookie Keidy Laureano finished with a double-double 10 points and 12 rebounds while Lange ended the night with 20 points.
For the Profs, Dominque Peters registered 23 points as one of four players in double-figures.
