UNION, N.J. (11/17/18) - Danielle Oakley finished with 16 points and seven steals as the Kean University women's basketball team needed double overtime to defeat the University of Lynchburg, 83-79 in the consolation game of the Kean Classic.
Payce Lange finished with 17 points for the Cougars who improve to 1-2 overall. Molly Shephard totaled 27 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets who fall to 1-3 overall.
The Cougars opened the contest with a 23-8 run after shooting 40.0% from the floor and 50.0% from downtown. Lynchburg countered with a zone defense, which shutdown Kean's offense and allowed the Hornets to cut the Cougar lead to 30-26 at halftime.
The second half saw Lynchburg use a 24-10 run to stretch their lead to 50-40 with 2:46 remaining in the third. The Hornets went ice cold, which allowed Kean to climb back in with a 13-1 run that gave them a 53-51 advantage on a Shannon McCoy layup with 6:44 remaining in regulation. Lynchburg answered with a 9-0 run for a 60-53 lead, before Kean closed out regulation with a 7-2 run that included a Keidy Laureano old fashion three point play with eight seconds remaining to force overtime.
An even first overtime session allowed the contest to enter a second overtime in which the Cougars took control. In the second overtime, the Cougars never trailed but had the Hornets on their tail the whole way. Lange and Dayna Sclafani were clutch down the stretch with Sclafani pouring in nine of her 14 points, while Lange added 10. Sclafani knocked down a triple, made a layup and connected on two free throws all in the final 2:30.
McCoy finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Laureano pulled down 10 boards. Casey Filiault added nine points and three rebounds.
The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20th, hosting the Gothic Knights of NJCU at 6:00 p.m.
