Newark, N.J. (11/28/18) – Rutgers-Newark took the lead for good in the fourth quarter on their way to defeating the Kean University women's basketball team by the final of 58-52 on Wednesday night in conference action.
Payce Lange led Kean (2-3, 1-1 NJAC) with a double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds. Faith Ashby paced Rutgers-Newark (4-1, 2-0 NJAC) with a game-high 26 points.
After falling behind early, the Cougars turned things around in the second period using a 12-2 run to push their advantage into double-digits, 29-17. The Scarlet Raiders edged their way back as Kean clung to a six point lead at the break (31-25).
It was a see-saw affair in the third quarter as Rutgers-Newark took their first lead of the second half with two and a half minutes to go. The teams would trade leads over the next two minutes with Kean holding their final lead of the day on a trey from rookie Shannon McCoy.
A fastbreak layup from Ashby with seven minutes to go gave Rutgers-Newark the lead for good (47-46).
McCoy finished with 10 points while Cindy Foresta added nine points and 11 rebounds.
Kean returns home to face Montclair State University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
