UNION, N.J. (3/29/11) – Sophomore Lyndsey Cannon scored a career-high 10 goals, however the Kean University women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome Montclair State University, as the Red Hawks recorded the 20-16 win in Skyline Conference and New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore Kailee Beal scored six goals for the Red Hawks (5-2, 3-0 Skyline, 2-0 NJAC), while Cannon's 10 goals are tied for the second most in Kean history.
After Montclair scored three of the game's first four goals, the Cougars (2-5, 2-1 Skyline, 0-2 NJAC) scored three straight to take a 4-3 lead on the unassisted goal by rookie Ciara Mastrodomenico. Montclair followed with two straight goals for the 5-4 lead, before Cannon answered with back-to-back goals for the 6-5 lead with 9:37 left in the first half. The Red Hawks would take the lead for good with three straight goals en-route to building a 10-8 lead at halftime.
Montclair State opened the second half with four straight goals to extend the lead to 14-8 just three minutes into the half. A pair of goals by Cannon (pictured left) pulled Kean back to within 14-10, however the Cougars could pull no closer than four goals the rest of the way, as Beal netted five of her six goals in the second half.
In the win, junior Cora Delfini had five goals and one assist, while senior attack Meghan Spitzer had two goals and five assists.
The Cougars take on Centenary College in a non-conference match on Thursday, March 31, at 2 p.m.
