Union, N.J. (8/31/12) – The Kean University women's soccer team opened the 2012 season with an 8-1 win over visiting Elms College in the first game of the Cougar Classic Friday afternoon.
Rookie Deanna Columbia (pictured left) led the way for the Cougars (1-0) with two goals. Junior Victoria Cebula got the Blazers (0-1) on the board in the second half to break the shutout.
Kean jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 45 minutes of action as senior Carly Seidel scored from eight yards out just over two minutes into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead. Senior Kristen Hager added to the lead as she chipped in the second goal of the day off a goalie deflection from the original shot of sophomore Sam Marchetti.
Freshman Kendyll Stahlin made in 6-0 early in the second half, before Cebula put Elms on the board with a chip from eight yards out. The Cougars closed out the match with two goals for their first win of the year.
Kean returns to action on Saturday when they host Shenandoah University at 2 p.m.
In other action, Richard Stockton College edged Shenandoah in the nightcap by the final of 2-1. Junior Jacque Becker broke the 1-1 tie in the 78th minute settling a rebound off the post. The Ospreys (1-0) scored the match's first goal in the 48th minute as junior Jessica Balnis netted the goal off a corner serve from Becker. The Hornets (0-1) tied things up seven minutes later senior Sarah Hensley scored an unassisted goal from 12 yards out.
